Kirk Werner,
Winner of The Sandy River Spey Clave T-Shirt Contest

By: Derek Bachmann
Kirk Werner is a freelance graphic designer and the author and illustrator of the popular series of children’s books featuring Olive, the Woolly Bugger. The books use fly fishing as a vehicle to tell stories, teach some basics about fly fishing and introduce a new generation to the sport of conservation-minded angling. There are currently 3 books in the series: Olive the Little Woolly Bugger, Olive and The Big Stream, and Olive Goes for a Wild Ride. Kirk lives east of Seattle, WA near the banks of the Snoqualmie River. He is also the voice behind the blog, The Unaccomplished Angler, which he readily admits is “purely for fun,” while also being painfully representative of his fishing skills. He has owned Itchy Dog Productions for the past 15 years which designs logos for small businesses in the Western Washington area.

Kirk Werner

During the interview with Kirk, I could tell that this was a guy I'd love to go fishing with. His passion for fly fishing is as strong as his passion for art and helping his fellow human beings. One of the first things he said to me was "I have enough Spey rods, and want to hold an auction for it and donate the proceeds to Casting for a Cure!" My jaw literally dropped, and I asked, did he realize that the rod we were talking about, is a G. Loomis NRX 1445/6-4 Spey Rod with a retail value of $1,100? Of course he did.

Nik Werner & Kirk Werner on the Bogachiel River

Kirk grew up in Western Washington and has never found a reason to move elsewhere and for good reason. He is only minutes away from the Snoqualmie and Skykomish rivers, and a few hours from some of the most famous Steelhead and Salmon tributaries in the nation like the Skagit, Sauk, and Olympic Peninsula rivers, including the Hoh and Bogachiel rivers.

I had the opportunity to ask Kirk a few questions:

Derek: What are your favorite rivers to fish?
Kirk: Well, being from Western Washington around the Duvall area, I fish the Skykomish and Snoqualmie for Steelhead and I love the Yakima for trout.
Derek: Who taught you how to Spey Cast?
Kirk: A friend of mine named Brian Paige.
Derek: Do you have a favorite Spey Rod?
Kirk: That's easy, my Sage Z-Axis 7136 is my go to Steelhead rod!
Derek: What about your favorite Trout Rod?
Kirk: Well, I guess I'm a Sage kinda Guy, my Sage Z-Axis 4 weight has to be my favorite
Derek: Do you have a favorite Fishing buddy?
Kirk: As a matter of fact, my son Nik, and he usually out fishes me!
By and large, Kirk Werner is one of the most pleasant people I have spoken to in a while and I'm happy that his design won the Sandy River Spey Clave T-Shirt contest.

Spey Clave 2014 Logo Contest
Perspective by: Mark Bachmann

The whole concept started to jell about four years ago, when someone said that we ought to sell T-Shirts at the Sandy River Spey Clave so fans could take home souvenirs. We did it for a couple of years, then skipped a year. Last year we started thinking it would be fun, and add to the drama of The Clave to have a contest each year to design the art work for the Sandy Clave T-Shirts. We had never done anything like it before. Josh Linn, of the G.Loomis team offered to put up an NRX Spey rod as the prize. We sent out invitations to all our Newsletter and Facebook friends several times. A month before the deadline, we started receiving artwork entries. Kirk Werner's winning entry was one of the first entries received. It was followed by a number of very interesting entries by other artists. Because of their affiliation to the project, Eric Nuefeld and Josh Linn were chosen as the judges. In the end it was unanimous, Kirk was the winner. It was several days after the contest ended that any of us became familliar with Kirk Werner. As it turns out, Kirk has produced a number winners that involve fly fishing, Olive The Little Woolly Bugger Series of children's books being only one of them.

What does the new logo signify? It is a dramatic rendition of fly line speed produced by a perfectly executed Spey Cast, resulting from a perfectly placed anchor, perfect acceleration to a perfect stop at the end of the stroke. It is all about fly line speed, which all about Spey Casting.

We are very proud to have this as our logo for Sandy River Spey Clave 2014!

A Perspective On The New Winston BIII TH Rods
By: Travis Johnson

Winston Rod Company has finally released their new Spey rods. As a Winston pro-staff member for the last 8 years, I was more than ready for something new. Before I ever got to see or touch one of the new rods, gossip rumors and whispers filtered through the Spey community. Hearing mixed reviews, I was very anxious to try one of these seemingly elusive rods.

After some schedule rearranging and over the patient waiting of what seemed like 4 months, I was able to put my good buddy Eric Neufeld (the Winston Rep) in my boat and get a day on the water. We put a couple of these new rods to the test. At least I did, he had been fishing the 7133 for a couple months, keeping it to himself I am sure.

Being a tourmament caster, I had to try one of my long belly Carron lines on it first. While lining the new 7133 the first thing I noticed was the new handle and grip. Picking the rod up I gave it the age-old wiggle test. Felt nice, recovered well, and the new shorter handle and sleeker bottom grip fit me like a glove. I started out short. The test of a good rod is its ability to control lines, even short ones. As I added distance the rod took on a different feel then it had originally. More line, yet a different feel. The constant was the rods recovery stayed the same, crisp and responsive. Even when firing out 120 foot casts, the line was easy to control. Eric noted the line speed and the narrow loops were exquisite. The control and feel was some of the best I have ecperienced in any Spey rod.

The first test was cleared…now for the Skagit line. An Airflo compact Skagit 540 gn seemed to do the job. This rod loaded deep, and with the shorter grip I could really feel it in my top hand. The deep load made the forward stroke almost effortless. The loops were smooth and the bottom leg was flat with energy transfer is in high gear. Eric could wait no longer, and jumped in to try both lines. It is fun to practice with your buddies trying new rod and line combinations!!!

Then after that the new 6126 came out, and the fishing shifted gears. That little devil of a rod is a line speed-producing machine. Coupled with a 450 gn Skagit Switch and 10 feet of t-11 it sang. I believe this might be in my Deschutes quiver this year!! The best feature I will say about the new 6126 is that it is feather light, even compared to other rods in the same category, it was notably less weight in hand.

On an over all personal view of the new rods, I will say I loved them. When casting them I tried to put myself in your shoes. The new 7133 is everything the older model was, and better. I believe that if you are a Winston fan or simply searching for the best 30/06 style Spey rod, from beginner to expert, you won't go wrong. You can call me at the shop, Saturday through Tuesday 1-800-266-3971. Happy Holidays to all from the crew at the Fly Fishing Shop.

Rio Skagit iFlight Shooting Heads

Introduced in 2013,these powerful, easy casting intermediate heads were designed to propel sink tips and large flies with the utmost ease. The iFlight gained instant recognition with certain cutting edge winter steelhead guides, and has since gained popularity with many non-professional anglers as well.
iFlights are the newest intermediate heads for the Skagit fly fisher. The short, powerful head has an 8ft long highly visible floating back end that is easy to track during the swing, and can be mended for total fly control. The unique clear camo intermediate front section is a fantastic asset when extra depth is needed, in strong current and also on windy days, or when a slower swing is needed. The iFlight is the best choice for long distance casting on big rivers where your fly has to be fished at extra depth.

  • Easy casting, deep loading design for effortless casts
  • Powerful front end casts fast sinking tips and large flies
  • Slow sinking intermediate tip for deeper and slower presentations
  • ID printed rear loop for fast head recognition
  • For best performance, RIO recommends attaching the following head sizes to these shooting lines sizes:
  • 275gr to 450gr – .026" ConnectCore shooting line, or 25lb GripShooter
  • 450gr to 550gr – .032" ConnectCore shooting line, or 35lb GripShooter
  • 550gr to 650gr – .037" ConnectCore shooting line, or 44lb GripShooter
  • 650gr and bigger – .042" ConnectCore shooting line, or 50lb GripShooter

    Rio Skagit iMOW Tips

Earlier this year RIO announce the mid-season release of a new series of sinking tips for the Skagit and Spey fly fisher. The tips, called “iMOW’s” are based on RIO’s hugely successful MOW tips, but built with an intermediate section instead of the floating section. The intermediate section of the iMOW’s create a smoother transition between an intermediate or floating Skagit head and the fast sinking tip for perfect depth control and the utmost in strike detection. This is especially true when fishing with an iFlight or any brand of intermediat head.
