We've used a lot of rods in the salt. Our adventures cover the gambit from tiny bonefish to behemoth marlins. Sage rods give maximum performance with unequaled reliability. We even have a pair of Sage 10903 RPLX rods that have been long since retired, but are cherished for their pleasant memories and will never be sold. I feel the same about the Xi2 rods that replaced them. Xi2 was lighter and more responsive than RPLX. Xi2 produced more line speed with less casting fatigue. Salt is a quantum leap over any saltwater fly rods ever produced. The blanks are noticeably lighter in weight, yet stronger and more resilient. Our prediction is that the new longer handles on the 11 thru 16 weight rods will be copied by other manufacturers. But, what's new; Sage has always built the most copied rods on the market.

Why Sage Salt???
On the flats, blue water or anywhere in between, your first shot is always the best shot. But, as experienced saltwater anglers know, sometimes that first shot means the bonefish you didn’t see until it was right here, and other times it’s an upwind bait ball way out there.

Sage's first saltwater rod created with their revolutionary Konnetic Technology, the medium-fast action (we consider it a salt-action) SALT loads quickly at all distances, allowing you to make your all important first cast with precision no matter the range of your quarry, all without casting fatigue. Powerfully tapered throughout, the stiffer tip section on this exquisite dark sapphire rod works in concert with the deeper bending middle and lower sections to help you quickly and effortlessly lift your line off the water for lighting fast casts that let you make the most of each opportunity.
With the same tip-to-hand sensitivity that all Sage's Konnetic Technology rods are known for, the SALT gives you the instant feedback you need for precision casts at moving targets. And the torsional control and tracking qualities of the blank deliver your fly exactly where you’re looking. Add in new custom components like the deeply knurled and ergonomically cantered reel lock nuts, a black Stealth bead blasted reel seat numbered by line weight for quick selection—plus its built in hook keeper, and it’s easy to see the SALT is built for fast paced action. Let’s face it, the saltwater is a place where the strong feed on the weak. Be the former.

Spey vs. Single-Hand, A Clinic On-The-Water
We are often asked, "What is the difference between fishing a river for steelhead with a single-hand rod versus a two-hand rod?" Both types of tackle can offer advantages over the other, depending on the circumstances...and the anglers involved.

It is said that fishing is both a process and a result, with a good process often leading to a favorable result. But for an experienced fisherman, he or she also realizes that the experience extends past the results, and brings them back to experiencing the process differently, or more with each passing, deepening their attunement to their craft and their surroundings.

Whether you are a novice, intermediate, or an experienced angler, come meet two legends with two different styles. Both of them have traversed through the process full circle, empowering them with not only results but also keen observations on the process, the art, the craft, and windows into the true personality of our surroundings. Sooner or later each angler decides which window they wish to observe from.

What better way to start, than to explore the possibilities by watching Jim Teeny and Mark Bachmann fish the same water with their favorite methods - all the while explaining to you what they are doing and why they are doing it.
The program starts on Saturday, January 17, 9:00am in our projection room at the shop, then migrates to the river for the "on-the-water demonstrations". Because of changeable water levels, the area for the on the water demonstrations will be disclosed after the projected presentations. Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no fee.

Foxee Dog
Meet one of the newer members of our staff. His name is John Christensen. Everybody calls him JC. Although comparatively new to us, JC is far from new to the sport of fly fishing. He's been around; worked in other shops and guided fisheries as diverse as Idaho spring creeks, and Alaskan tundra rivers. He's also fished the Baja and Belize (and lots of other places). JC loves winter steelhead...probably the reason he signed on with us. He is pictured here with a local Chromer, that fell for a Foxee Dog, Popsicle.
The Foxee Dog Series was originated by Charles "Chaz" St. Pierre. This is what he says about this series, "Inspired by the Hairwing/Temple Dog” common to the northern European Atlantic salmon fly fishery, these unique flies combine a medium/large silhouette with amazing life-like action using natural and synthetic materials that is also easy to cast. Simple, elegant, and highly effective, the long profile allows this fly to attract and be seen by fish within a wide range of water conditions. The long and limp materials create incredible life-like action without trapping air to allow maximum depth-penetration quickly and efficiently. The flash core/hackled body creates contrast and reflects light beneath and inside the fly silhouette. The “Foxee Dog” fly, and the color combinations used for this series have proven themselves to be extremely effective throughout the range of steelhead and salmon streams here in North America from northern California to Alaska."

A couple of years ago I was fortunate enough to spend a day with April Vokey and Marcy Stone in my boat. They are a pair of very highly skilled anglers. Marcy caught a winter steelhead on a Foxee Dog, Black and Orange. April tailed it. I shot video, one of my most favorite fishing days - and I never made a cast. MB
