We Know Fly Tying Materials, because we know fly tying!
For the first five years, all the flies sold at The Fly Fishing Shop in Welches, Oregon were tied in-house. Many were tied by school children who went through school with expendable incomes in their pockets. They learned that discipline and hard work bring dividends in life. These kids are all grown and have families of their own. Several now own and operate their own businesses.
Nothing teaches you more about fly tying material than tying thousands of flies. The fly tying materials that we stock are handpicked with loving care.
Many of our closest friends are world renowned fly tiers. Many do demos at our store. Guys like Bruce Berry, Charles St. Pierre, Brian Silvey, Brian Kite, Darian Hyde, and may more make regular guest appearances. Check our our: Events Page for the schedule of events.

Hoh Bo Spey Fly, Orange/Pink
Hot Fly This Past Week
This beautiful pink and orange fly mimics both shrimp and squid, two favorite foods for early winter steelhead as they traverse the shallower water over the Continental Shelf. Pink and orange flies are perfect during the tail end of winter spates, and show up well during "steelhead-green" water conditions. Fish this fly on a slow swing using a sinking tip designed to keep your offering within a foot of the bottom.

Scientific Anglers Skagit Line with Integrated Tip

This steelhead was landed with a Scientific Anglers Skagit line
Most popular Skagit type Spey lines are shooting heads made from an assemblage of line types specifically designed to folfill different functions of the cast and fly presentation. Skagit lines in general are made to present large steelhead/salmon flies at a wide variety of ranges deep in flowing currents. Most Skagit lines incorporate high-density sinking tips connected to a heavy floating body connected to a shooting line.  All of the pieces are joined together with loop to loop connections. The typical Skagit shooting line covers a lot of different fishing situations. However, problems can occur during the delivery of such lines, because the different types of materials used in such lines sometimes don't play nice together resulting in casts that can be kind of clunky and irregular. Loop to loop connections can be especially annoying while playing fish, when they create extra friction in the rod guides at exactly the wrong times. Plus anglers often find that they fish the entire season with one sinking tip and pack around a lot of paraphernalia that they don't need. The Scientific Anglers Skagit Line with Integrated Tip solves many of the distractions that typical multi piece Skagit lines create. There are no loop to loop connections in the integrated line. These seamless fly lines cast smoothly and play fish even smoother. The fast sinking T-12 tip covers most of the fishing situations that winter anglers in the Pacific Northwest will encounter, especially if they are willing to vary their casting angle to fit specific water speeds and depths.
  • Short head with integrated sinking tip to eliminate loop to loop connections
  • Short head gives excellent line control
  • Fast loading taper designed for maximum flight time
  • For double hand and switch rods in all conditions
  • T-12 integrated sinking tip (type V)

    Foxee Dog Flies
    Black/Blue Black/Orange Popsicle

This Sandy River, Oregon winter steelhead is featured on the video below.
Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, Kings have fallen for Foxee Dog in every one of the featured colors.
Charles St. Pierre designed the Foxee Dog anadromous fish fly series using traditional, proven proportions, but used the latest materials and tying techniques. Following the lines of the famous Nordic Atlantic Salmon Temple Dog Series, the Foxee Dog Series is tied on Waddington Shanks rather than tubes. This places the hook back further toward the rear of the fly, because Pacific Coast fish often grab from the rear of the fly. Foxee Dog Flies are tied with a combination of Arctic Fox and angel Hair in the wing. these materials are very fine, and flow and pulse in the water with life imitating motion. Foxee dogs are beautiful to look at. They shimmer and dance in the currents. Foxee Dogs are slightly smaller and lighter in weight than most Intruder style flies and therefore allow an angler to cover a different range of fishing conditions. They are superbly adapted to big wide classic runs. Best of all they catch fish, as witnessed by the pictures below.

    Foxee Dog, Popsicle

Marcy Stone displays a Sandy river winter steelhead that ate a Foxee Dog in Popsicle colors.
George Cook developed an orange & purple marabou fly called the Popsicle in the 1980's. It went on to become one of the most popular flies in Alaska and British Columbia. Charles St. Pierre has adapted the colors to a lighter, airier version.
