Tying Steelhead Flies Using Ostrich Feathers
Pro's Choice Intruder Plumes Tip Dyed Barred Plumes
These feathers come from the world's largest farm raised  flightless birds.

Barred Ostrich Plumes

Tying Steelhead flies Using Ostrich Feathers Part I
This Barred Ostrich is really primo material for Intruder flies. This is the replacement for dyed grizzly saddle hackles. Many experienced tiers, and anglers say it is even better. The bars are very fine and evenly spaced for an exquisite effect. When you see the precision coloring, you are going to say, "How did they do that?" There are about fifty large herls attached to about three inches of stem, per pack.

Tying Steelhead flies Using Ostrich Feathers Part II

Ostrich plumage is used for many fly tying applications. Certain types of herl is wrapped as hackle, other types work better for wings, tails or tentacles. All types of ostrich herl may be wrapped as parts of fly bodies or entire fly bodies. Herl bodies may be left round or sculptured to form abdomens with banks of gills.
Ostrich Plumes, Pro's Choice
These are med/large plumes with large herl for tying saltwater flies and bushy Intruder style steelhead flies. This is the grade that the best professional fly tiers use.
Ostrich herl is used in many types of flies. Herls are soft and absorb water readily for much movement when wet. Herls shed water quickly as soon as they are removed from the water. This makes flies tied with herl lightweight and easy to cast. Herls may be wrapped for bodies or used as streamer wings. Pro's Choice grade herl is perfect for Alec Jackson Spade type flies and Jeff Hickman Fish Taco style flies. When using fat herls with Fish Taco type flies, it is often wise to dress your flies on the sparse side to obtain maximum movement and swimming action. Often around 8-10 herls gives better action than 10-15 herls.
Average stem length is 12".  Average herl length is 4".

Extra Select Ostrich Intruder Plumes
This is the preferred Ostrich for medium size intruders because this herl really moves around in the water. Intruder Plumes are often used as Rhea substitute, and some very experienced guides claim that these fibers give better action than the best Rhea at half the price.
