Mark Bachmann, Deschutes River, Winston B2X67126
New for 2009! Possibly the ultimate light line steelhead rod for the Deschutes, Grand Ronde, North Umpqua, Klickitat, etc. We have already caught a bunch of Deschutes steelhead with this rod. These fish have ranged from 4-11 pounds. We have used both the Airflo Scandi Compact and Rio AFS lines to fish size 4-6 traditional wet and waking flies. There is little discernible difference between the performance of these two lines on this rod. We fished this Winston in some howling winds, which it handled as well as any small rod we have used. It was rigged with a Waterworks/Lamson ULA Force 3.4 reel for perfect balance. The Winston BIIX 12' 6" 6/7 is destined to be one of the most popular two-hand rods ever made. Mark my words: "This is truly a great fly rod."
Andre Scholz Scandinavian Shooting Head Recommendation: 390-420 grains.
Floating Line Recommendations: Airflo Scandi Compact 390, Rio AFS 400, Rio WindCutter 6/7
Use: 510-grain Skagit Compact for sinking tip work.
Rod weight: 5 1/2 Ounces.

B2X78133

Length: 13' 3"       Line: #7/8     Pieces: 4

Winston Spey

An extraordinary lightweight medium-fast action two-hand rod that will make effective fly presentations at all distances. Since its introduction in 2007, this has been one of the most popular Spey rods for both summer and winter steelhead. The B2X78133 has the ability to feel very comfortable with a wide range of line weight and fly sizes. It is also adaptable to wide range of fish sizes from 4 to over 20 pounds. Will feel comfortable with tiny skaters and 3" long stinger flies fished with T-11 or T-14.
Our favorite reel to balance this rod is the Nautilus 12.
Andre Scholz Scandinavian Shooting Head Recommendation: 447-478 grains.
Floating Line Recommendations: Airflo Scandi Compact 480, Rio AFS 460, Rio WindCutter 7/8 Use: 540-grain Skagit Compact for sinking tip work.

Bob Monteih, Deschutes River, B2X8914
If you only own one two-hand rod to fish steelhead and salmon, make it this one. We've fished such diverse rivers as the Sandy, Clackamas, Klickitat, Deschutes, Skagit and Hoh with this stick. We've caught summer steelhead, winter steelhead, Coho and Chinooks with it. It may be the best rod for fishing sinking tips ever made in the world. If you are going to fish B.C., take one of these with you; or better than that take a pair.
Our favorite reel to balance this rod is the Nautilus 12/DD.
Andre Scholz Scandinavian Shooting Head Recommendation: 493-524 grains.
Floating Line Recommendations: Airflo Scandi Compact 540, Rio AFS 520, Rio WindCutter 8/9

December Day  A steelhead fly by: Tom Larimer
"December Day In The Corner" Photo by: Josh Linn
"December Day In The Corner", photo by Josh Linn
Tom Larimer says: This was a fly I originally tied for Great Lakes steelhead. Iíll never forget the first day I fished it. It was early December and I was fishing a Lake Michigan tributary not far from where I grew up. The first fish of the morning crushed the fly so hard my reel backlashed instantly. Somehow, I managed to land that fish. As I finished the pool, my last cast was rewarded with my fourth fish of the morning. I knew I had something special. When I moved out west I had forgotten about the fly. After all, it was tied for the Great Lakes. I still had a few buried in an old Wheatley with my Great Lakesí patterns. For nostalgic reasons, I fished it on the Deschutes one early December day a few years ago. Turns out, West Coast fish liked the fly too. Itís a great producer on soft flats in the late fall.
Dick Bushnell and his top secret fly.
"Dick Bushnell and his well known top secret fly", photo by Mark Bachmann
Mark Bachmann says: The big orange & chartreuse fly first appeared in my Deschutes Camp in October 2007. My friend Dick had been given a half dozen by a friend. After a three fish morning, Dick touted the pattern as his top secret fly, and was even evasive about how he had acquired it. Fishing was good and we were all catching fish. Even a client who had yet to learn how to cast very well had hooked two steelhead. Any time a client catches a steelhead, I focus on what they are using. That morning the patterns ran the full spectrum from large and bright to small and dark. However, Dick was top rod for the morning. Dick was top rod for the next two sessions also, and I tied a few of my own big bright orange & chartreuse flies with my camp fly tying kit. They also caught steelhead.
It was three months before we learned where the fly originated. It next turned up in a box of samples displayed to us by George Cook, the Solitude Fly Company rep. Someone at the table exclaimed, "That's Dick's secret fly!"  We all got a chuckle out of that one. The fly was labeled "December Day" and was first tied by Tom Larimer, a popular local fly fishing guide. December Day has become a staple fly at our store, and in our own fly boxes.
For us, it has caught steelhead from the Deschutes, John Day, Grand Ronde, Sandy and Clackamas in water temperatures ranging from 38-65 degrees. This is a pattern that can bring success in a wide range of fishing conditions. These flies seem to become even more productive when they get ragged from repeated use. Our December Day bins are nearly always full. Call ahead just to make sure.

Get your Trout Fishing PhD
With fly-fishing author and instructor Rick Hafele,
and a supporting cast of: Mark Bachmann, Josh Linn & Ron Walp
June 9, 10, & 11, 2010 on the Deschutes River
Rick Hafele
The Trout Fishing PhD program, sponsored by The Fly Shop in Welches, Oregon, is a unique opportunity to take your fly fishing skills to another level and do it in a secluded setting on a world class trout stream with a group of world class fly fishing instructors.

First, the location for this program is special.  Students will be brought in by large comfortable jet boats to a roadless section of the Deschutes River to a completely set-up campsite.  ďCampĒ will include all the amenities including electricity and a classroom for slideshows and instruction.  The Deschutes River is well known as a first-class trout stream with incredible scenery, and in early June insect hatches include caddisflies, mayflies and stoneflies.  With long days and pleasant temperatures itís a perfect time to be on the river.

Second, the instruction for this program will be extensive, hands-on, and fun.  It will include:

  • Tackle: You will get first-hand help with your tackle, making sure it is balanced properly with the correct fly line and leader, so you can make proper casts and presentations.

  • Tactics: Fishing nymphs, emergers, and dries will be discussed in detail and demonstrated and then you will get individual guidance and help with each method.

  • Pattern Selection: You will get in-depth instruction in how to decipher the often-confusing world of pattern selection.  What insects are abundant and important?  What are the trout actually feeding on?  What patterns will effectively match the insects and look like food to the trout?

  • The Biology of Trout and Bugs:  Getting set-up with proper tackle, tactics, and fly patterns is where most classes stop.  But to get your Trout Fishing PhD you will also learn about the biology of trout and the insects they eat.  Using the teaching facilities at camp, engaging slide shows will be presented that cover how to recognize key insect hatches important across the west, how insects behave, and how that behavior affects trout feeding and your fly-fishing tactics.  But donít worry, you wonít need a biology degree to grasp this information, and you will come away with a whole new level of understanding of trout and bugs that will improve your fishing and your appreciation of the places you fish.

  • Application: Since you will be camping on the banks of the Deschutes River, there will be ample opportunity to apply the information covered throughout the program and get help when needed.  This also means you will have a chance to catch some of the Deschutes wild redsides!

Finally, the guest instructor for your trout fishing PhD will be Rick Hafele.

Rick is one of the best-known and accomplished fly-fishing authors and instructors in the West.  He spent his professional career as a freshwater biologist and has a masterís degree in aquatic entomology.  He has also been fly fishing for more than 45 years and has applied his knowledge of biology and fly fishing by authoring and co-authoring many important books like Nymph Fishing Rivers and Streams, Western Mayfly Hatches, The Complete Book of Western Hatches, and An Anglerís Guide to Aquatic Insects.  In addition he has written the Entomology column for American Angler magazine for 30 years, plus is the instructor in many well-known and effective instructional DVDís including Anatomy of a Trout Stream, Fly-Fishing Large Western Rivers, and Nymph Fishing Basics and Advanced Nymph Fishing.  While Rick has a great deal of knowledge and experience, he also has the ability to share that knowledge in a clear and entertaining way.  Thereís no better way to learn than by having fun while you do it.

This special program will be limited to just 8 people.  If you want a truly unique in-depth learning experience in a truly special setting that will give you a chance for some excellent fishing to boot, sign up now.
