The Evolution Of Litespeed
Smoother, Lighter, Faster until you reach Litespeed....
The Litespeed series of reels was first introduced to public in 1999. We were one of the first dealers to use them, and stock them. The reels were revolutionary in many respects. They were a true large arbor design and had a waterproofed conical drag system that was silky smooth...almost. Early models had problems leaking water into the drag mechanism, which caused a kinds of difficulties with the roller bearings. Many companies would have scrapped the design in favor of something more conventional, not Waterwork-Lamson. They kept improving the materials until they got it right, and then they retrofitted, free of charge every Litespeed reel they ever produced, so that each customer got their money's worth...and had the advantages of the newest developements.
The Litespeed Series of reels has been through at least four major improvements in the last twelve years, and all the parts of the newest reels are interchangeable with the first production models.
They keep getting lighter, smoother and more dependable. In the last twelve years Waterwork-Lamson has produce several other series of reels to fit many different applications and many different budgets. Every design has been built around the conical drag, which has multiple advantages. Conical drags take up very little room, but have very large surfaces to spread the friction load. The biggest, baddest reel in this configuration is called the Vanquish. The right hand reel in the picture is a #10 Vanquish. The newest machining techniques were incorporated into the lighter built Litespeed Series in the last up-grade. This is a novel approach in the fly reel production process. The Litespeed an ever-improving design.
I have found that a Litespeed #3.5 is a good companion to my newest Spey rod, a G. Loomis 13'- 7/8 NRX. It is lightweight enough not to effect the action this incredibly high tech rod. The size-3.5 with the "deep-v" spool will hold 250-yards of #50 TUF Line XP, and a Spey shooting head system for 6/7, 7/8 weight rods. It is the right size and weight to also fit 8/9/10 weight saltwater outfits. For that reason we purchased five reels and four spools for a upcoming recent trip to Belize.

The five LITESPEED 3.5 reels pictured here fit #8, #9 & #10 rods perfectly for average saltwater applications. Each reel is loaded with 250-yards of #50 TUF LINE XP backing.

The largest fish landed on our recent trip to Belize with a LITESPEED 3.5 reel was this tarpon estimated to be about sixty pounds.

Winter Steelhead Flies (Directory)

Flies are constantly evolving as our understanding of game fish and the prey they eat, progresses. The sport of fly fishing really is a search for knowledge of the natural world around us, especially the aquatic components. The evolution of this knowledge can be traced in the history of fly tying skills and the progression of fly patterns over the past 500 years. The rise of industrial technology has played a role. Most modern flies still contain natural materials that were available in the beginning. But, many key components used in the latest winter steelhead flies have only been available in the last few years. The Fly Fishing Shop has always been on the cutting edge of winter steelhead fly development. We remain on the forefront today! CONTINURED BELOW...

CONTINUED FROM ABOVE: On the average, winter steelhead flies are getting larger. This is not only because we are learning how to tie larger flies, but more importantly we are developing the tackle and skills to fish larger flies more comfortably. Certain strains of steelhead prefer large flies. Many of them return to our rivers during the winter months.
Development of the most important new patterns, is most naturally by the hardest working professional fly fishing guides. If you are a guide, your career is dependent on your ability to be able to get your clients hooked up. It stands to reason if you spend 100-200 days a year fishing for steelhead, you are going to learn a lot about how to catch them.
Pictured above is a selection of flies that are on the cutting edge of winter steelhead fly development. These patterns were developed and proven by the area's best winter steelhead guides: Mark Bachmann, Mike Kinney, Brian Silvey, Marty Sheppard, Tom Larimer, Brian Kite, Scott Howell, George Cook and Charles St. Pierre. Our Company roots are in winter steelhead fly fishing. We have the most complete selection of winter steelhead fly fishing gear in the region, if not the world. Our aim is to remain the leader and bring you the best winter steelhead fly fishing tackle available, and this includes the best selection of winter steelhead flies. We also intend to make this collection most convenient to access on the internet.

Skagit Shooting Heads For Winter Steelhead
Airflo Skagit Compact Rio Flight Sientific Anglers Extreme
"Spey Casting" is a style of sport fishing that evolved on the salmon rivers of the British Isles. Anglers on Scotland's Spey River are credited with having the most influence in this evolution. Skagit Casting is a style of Spey Casting that evolved two hundred years later on the rivers draining of the Pacific Coast of North America. A group of anglers on Washington's Skagit River get credit for the major developments. Many steelhead and salmon return to this region during periods when these river are at their fullest flows. Very large flies, fished deep along the bottom have proven to be a popular and productive approach. This requires special gear to be most effective. Short, thick floating shooting heads with very fast sinking tips have gained extreme popularity. These were called Skagit lines. Most of these lines are now attached to slick fine diameter shooting lines. they are called Skagit Shooting heads.
The first Skagit Shooting Heads were little more than straight sections of heavy fly line in lengths of 27'-30'. Lengths of sinking line from 9'-15' were attached to them. Good casters could propel  monster flies respectable distances. More importantly, these compact lines enabled anglers to fish in areas previously impossible to fish with flies. This started to occur on many rivers that were commonly only fished with spinning and casting gear. Winter steelhead fishing gained immediate popularity with many fly anglers, because they finally had equipment that enabled them to cover the water. That popularity is still growing, to the point that many days, fly fishers out-number gear fishers.
In the beginning of this trend (around 1990), fly fishers just wanted to be able to get the fly out there. Then on most rivers, it became obvious that you not only had to get the fly out there, but you also had to fish it deep. The original Skagit Style Spey Shooting Head Line solved most of these problems. These kinds of lines were able to turn-over very large weighted flies and deliver them to depth. However, because of their short lengths and lack of taper, these lines turned over in the air so fast that they lacked casting accuracy and distance. Additional engineering and tooling was required to build tapers into the lines to tame them down to a point where they were more user friendly.
Modern Skagit Lines are easy to use and very productive to fish with.

Airflo Skagit Compact Heads

Airflo lines are very smooth!

Spey casting is easier to learn with instruction...
Spey casting is more easily learned with instruction.

New in 2008, this new shorter and more compact head instantly made a huge impact in both design influence and sales within the industry. It is still one of the most popular lines of its type in the world. The Skagit Compact heads were designed to make fishing in tough places easier. The heads were developed with the help of serious line nerds and Skagit guides like Dec Hogan, who made their living being able to get the fly down to the fish with limited room to make a "D" loop. These lines increment every 30 grains from 360 to 720, ensuring you will never need to cut and splice a line ever again. The heads range from 22 to 27 feet, come with the toughest loop design in the industry, and are now numbered and color coded so you will never need to confuse one line from another."

Skagit Compact Intermediate Heads
Great Lakes anglers identified the need for a line that would cast and fish like our Skagit compact, but would avoid all the surface hydraulics caused by corrugated bottom structures. While in development and testing the Skagit Intermediate Compact opened our eyes to a whole new level of fly presentation. No longer do you have to put up with tumultuous surface currents pulling at the floating portion of your Skagit system. The Skagit Intermediate gets you below the surface and into more even, mid-strata flows, allowing for a smoother more direct fly presentation. Two tone in color, the front taper and belly section are transparent Heron Gray intermediate, and the floating back taper is Sky Blue. Featuring Power Core for direct contact and solid hook sets, Airflo's industry leading Flexi-loops at both ends, and easy to read head size label. Skagit casting anglers will benefit from this line no matter where you fish.

Rio Skagit Flight Shooting Heads
These lines are hot! We have good stock! Buy Now! Specifications
The Fly Fishing Shop customer, Fred Evens testing the Rio Skagit Flight. This steelhead weighed about 12-pounds.
Rio enlisted some of the most experienced salmon/steelhead fishers in the country to help design and prove their new Skagit Flight Shooting Head system. Guides such as: Mark Bachmann, Josh Linn, Brian Silvey, & Hawkeye Hawkins were included in the field testing crew. They worked directly with Simon Gawesworth to design the most modern Spey Line system to fit the latest rods and casting techniques. Final design testing was done at our very own Summer Steelhead PhD School on the Deschutes River. What has been produced here is the ultimate tool for fishing large flies on sinking tip lines, plus an extraordinary line for fishing in the wind.

The new Skagit Flight Shooting Head may be the ultimate design in Skagit lines for maximum flight time, effortless casting strokes and the tightest and sweetest of loops. Based on the extraordinarily successful AFS head, the line features a back end that loads rods deeply and easily and a long, subtle front taper that ensures the energy flows smoothly to the tip, generating gorgeous loops and long, long flight times and distance. The front end has a thick tip that packs a big punch and easily lifts out heavy tips and large flies with supreme ease.

The heads vary in length between 24 ft and 31 ft, depending on the size, and the range of weights ensures that even the most fastidious of casters will be able to tune their rod to perfection.
Attach a shooting line to the ultra strong welded loop at the back end and one of RIO’s 15 ft tips or a piece of T-11, T-14 or T-17 (sold separately) to the exceptionally neat, bullet proof front loop.

Scientific Anglers Mastery Spey Skagit Extreme Floating Heads

Marcy Stone testing a Scientific Anglers Skagit line

Steelhead are Pacific Northwest Icons. The anglers who pursue them are some of the most passionate in the world. Some steelhead anglers spend over a hundred days a year on the water. Around here most of these dedicated anglers use two-handed fly rods equipped with Skagit style fly lines. Skagit lines evolved on the winter steelhead rivers of the Pacific Northwest,

where casting large flies long distance with little back-cast room is common. The Mastery Spey Skagit Extreme was first showed to us by Garry Sandstrom while fishing for winter steelhead on the Sandy River. "Skagit style lines" and "Skagit style casting" are fairly new concepts; first becoming popular in the mid-1990's. As such, equipment and techniques are still evolving. The Mastery Spey Skagit Extreme is newest "Skagit style line" to hit the market. It offers some features worth your attention. First the finish is silky smooth, and the loops are very streamlined and in-line with the rest of the line for smooth passage through the rod guides. The heads are heavy and designed to bend a rod deep for maximum power. The taper is designed to work at all ranges, especially long ranges.

Mastery Spey Skagit Extreme Intermediate Heads

The popular Skagit Extreme Heads are now available in a unique Intermediate, slow sinking configuration. Conceptualized and tested extensively by Scientific Anglers Company rep, and anadromous fish wizard Garry Sandstrom, these heads provide some extreme tactical advantages over their floating counterparts, especially when the water is very warm or very cold. Since the whole head of the fly line rides below the fast skin of the river's surface, your line will fish deeper, and move much more slowly across the river, allowing your fly to stay in the strike zone of every fish much longer than when fishing with a floating head and a sinking tip of the same size. As the video above discloses, we were aware of this new line for many months before it became available to the public in August, 2011. They work, and under certain conditions will increase your hook-ups.
