Rio Spey VersiLeaders
Big steelhead & small Spey rod the componants of fun...

We received the first new Rio VersiLeaders in July.  We have had a busy steelhead season to use them, and to compare them to Airflo's popular PolyLeaders.  You might remember Josh Linn's PolyLeader article in the 08/12/07 "Insider" newsletter, where he told you how to catch more steelhead while the sun is on the water. Well VersiLeaders are as good, are made in USA, and are $9.95.

Rio Spey VersiLeaders
New for 2008

10 ft (3 m) leaders with a high tenacity nylon core coated with a super low modulus polymer mixture. VersiLeaders feature an ultra smooth welded loop in the butt end making it easy to connect to the fly line.
The floating 10' Spey VersiLeader is perfect for forming the anchor when spey casting Scandinavian style.
These leaders are ideal additions to all Spey lines and in particular RIO's new AFS heads and AFS OutBound lines

Densities: Floating, 1.5 ips (3.7 cm/s), 2.6 ips (6.6cm/s), 3.9 ips (9.9cm/s), 5.6 ips (14.2cm/s), 7.0 ips (17.8cm/s)

Strength: 24lb

Ross Flystart Fly Fishing Reels
We were notified in July that Sage would no longer be producing their popular 1201 and 1401 reels.  This had a profound impact on our business plan as these reels had been the cornerstone of our Super Popular Value Priced Rod/Reel/Line - Winston, Sage & TFO Combo Outfits...we're talking about hundreds sold.  We had to scramble to find a replacement reel.  After holding a short store meeting to discuss the situation, John, Jeff, Josh & myself concluded that we wanted to hold the line on price and quality; no point in losing ground on either item.  Jon Covich and the Ross Reel Company came to our aid and in doing so, raised the bar on value.  The new reel is called the Flystart.  It costs the same money as the Sage 1201/1401 reels, comes in two more sizes and has a better finish and smoother drag with a wider range of settings.  It looks very much like the Ross Rhythm reel that costs $180-$240. We're excited. We believe we can deliver even more value on reel/backing/line and rod/reel/line outfits.  These are great Christmas gifts for beginning and intermediate fly fishers.  We've got lots in stock!

The Flystart is a hybrid large arbor fly reel that is inexpensive, yet built with the same commitment to quality and performance as all Ross reels. The drag system is designed to be smooth, consistent and have a wide range of adjustment. Fly fishing is a sport that everyone can enjoy, but for many people, the price of fly tackle is often a barrier to participation. The Ross team was committed to producing an introductory priced fly reel that would perform to the expectations of even the most experienced angler, and the Flystart series perfectly meets this goal. You will be amazed with it's

quality in manufacturing tolerance, drag performance and sound. The Flystart is a great reel for first-time fly fishing participants that demand quality, but do not want to spend a fortune gearing up to fish.

State of The Watershed
Ken Anderson called, and said, there was a half submerged hide-a-bed in the river in front of his house. Could we come down and give him a hand in removing it? We said, "sure as soon as we could round up some help."  We figured the waterlogged couch might weigh several hundred pounds.  Josh called around and got Karl, Cullein & Dave to help.  It was a good thing there was six of us because the couch was really heavy.  Well it's out of the river.  Thanks for the help guys.

More State of The Watershed
I enjoyed being with an ODFW Commission bus tour of the Sandy River Watershed 11/08/07. This is a tour to familiarize the Commission members about fish & game management issues within the watershed itself. We met at Resort at The Mountain, then went to the Marmot Dam decommissioning zone, then into the City of Portland Bull Run Reserve.  We finished the tour here in Welches and visited with local land owners who are repairing flood damage done to their water front property, while enhancing fishery habitat at the same time.  Especially interesting was our visit to the Marmot Dam site.  The spillway and the fish ladder are completely gone.  The gravel that lay stacked to fifty feet deep behind the dam  is slowly shifting down the canyon.  Fish passage is uninterrupted and a beautiful, braided channel flows through where the dam used to be.  Surprisingly, there has been almost no turbidity resulting from this massive bed-load shift. Our river appears to be returning to nature, even as civilization encroaches upon it.  It speaks well of the husbandry and stewardship of the community that surrounds it.  I found that conversation with the individual commissioners was alert, attentive and well informed.  I was made to feel comfortable when amongst them and the professional resource managers that accompanied them.  Good things are happening within the Sandy River Watershed and winning is more fun than losing.

Join Mark Bachmann and Patty Barnes for an adventure in bluewater fly fishing.  Loreto, Mexico has long been regarded as one of the best Dorado ports in the world. Striped Marlin and Pacific Sailfish compliment your fly fishing menu along with Pacific Bonito and highly prized Rooster Fish.  The scenery is spectacular, featuring a starkly rugged desert contrasting with dark blue water.  The weather will be hot and and your clothing will be skimpy.  Fishing periods start at daylight and end in the early afternoon, allowing for lots of leisure time around the pool or walks into town.  There is also plenty of time for what may be the best of all Mexican traditions, the siesta.  As with any trip of this nature, the "destination operation" has a great deal of influence on your enjoyment.  We have chosen the

most practical accommodations and the most experienced fly fishing guides in the area.  You will be provided with a spacious air conditioned beach front "Villa Class" room at Hotel La Pinta.  Guides, boats and fishing logistics are provided by Baja Big Fish Company.  In this trip all of the bases have been covered and all of the tricky details are dealt with.   Items such as Mexican

Fishing License, bait for chum, lunches, water in the boat, are covered in the package price.  You show up at the Loreto Airport with your fishing gear and luggage and a nice lady will be waiting with a couple of very large vans and and a crew to transport you to your hotel and your room.  Mark and Patty will be there to help you get settled in and show you around. That evening there will be a group meeting to orient you for the fishing that will occur the next morning.     Loreto Weather Report.

To give you as much individual freedom as possible, ground based meals are not provided in the packages.  Hotel La Pinta has an excellent restaurant and bar on the property.  There is also a wide variety of other restaurants within easy walking distance.  Cab service is secure and inexpensive.  Shopping, sight seeing  and diving is available for the non-fisher.

What can you realistically expect for fishing?  Many of the fish in the Sea of Cortez are very large and can be challenging. If you bring only one outfit make it a #12 weight with 300 yards of backing.  Take the time to learn how to cast it with flies that range from 3" to 9" long.  If you haven't fished bluewater before, expect that there may be a learning curve.  Also expect that your guide will be coaching you during your entire trip.  Your guide shouldn't have to teach you how to cast.  He should spend his time teaching you how to make practical presentations.  The rewards can be incredibly large.  This is a big boy/big girl arena.  Hope you can join us.
This group is limited to 12 anglers.
