This fly is believed to have originated on the east coast of North Americas as an Atlantic Salmon pattern. With its peacock herl body, black hackle and wing, it is a very dark fly that silhouetts aginst heavy cloud covered sky, and the dying light of late evening. It is well proven as a a very good fly for steelhead during periods of glacial silt. I has just enough color at the butt, and enough sparkle in the body to elicit curiosity. small dark flies are often productive comback fliesfor fish that have been moved with larger or brighter colored flies, but which have been proven to be players, but nt biters. Carry some sixe eights for jus such occaisions. If the fish still won't move, walk fifty feet upstream and throug a cople of half hitches behind the eye of the hook to keep the fly near the surface.
Many anglers believe that there is no stronger more durable leader material than Maxima. Period. It has gained fanatical following of the most renowned trout, bass, steelhead, salmon and saltwater anglers. This is because of its 100% constancy and total reliability. Maxima has a high durability finish that avoids nicks and abrasions. This finish also helps to control knot slippage, which is a major factor in knot breakage. We've got the best price and freshest stock!
Maxima Chameleon is very hard and abrasion resistant tippet material. Its dark brown color is infrared sensitive to blend with the surroundings when submerged. It is best when fishing deep. For those reasons it has become the most popular salmon and steelhead tippet for Skagit style fishing with your fly sunk near the bottom.
I first discovered Chameleon in about 1969, while attending a Sandy River Chapter of Northwest Steelheades. Maxima rep, Ben Silknitter was the guest speaker. Ben was one of the most persuasive takle salesmen I ever met. I leve the meeting light on money, but rich in leader material. It is till the best when running your gear deep and that includes patterns like: Sigature Intruders, Lady GaGa's, Mark's Marabou Spey Intruders. Chameleon is tough, reliable leader material that holds knots and is apparently hard for fish to see. Seems as though my catch rate goes up on dark days when Maxima Chameleon is the connection between my dark sinking tip and my big fly, which is often also dark, but flashy.
Trout fisher who specialize in keeping their nymphs near the bottom, like Chameleon for the same reasons skagit style steelheaders, and Chinook angler like it.
Maxima Clear has the same properties as Chameleon, except it doesn't contain the infrared sensitive dye. It has a non-reflective finish that makes it nearly invisible under most light, and water conditions. Clear is a good choice for all situations where a dark colored tippet is not appropriate such as surface steelhead or saltwater flats fishing.
Maxima Clear is my favorite go-to tippet for Greased-Line steelhead fishing where the fly and the tippet are silhouetted against the sky. I've also used it extensively while fishing deep with sinking tips. It does a great job in this arena too.
Maxima Clear is a very good leader choice for most saltwater fly fishing.
Maxima Ultra Green is supple and softer than either Chameleon or Clear. It is nearly invisible in most river and lake water. It has good knot strength and is very popular for fishing nymphs or dry flies for trout.
Maxima Ultra Green is popular with steelhead/salmon anglers who fish glacial fed streams.
Importantly, Maxima Green in #30 bends about the same as a Scandi line tip. So the energy of the cast is transmitted smootly from the line through a hand tied leader to the fly.
