and bring home the gold to my ladies...Audrey & Jamie!

Travis says:
"Well I finally did it I accomplished one of my goals in the world of fly fishing. Further more Spey casting. I set out on the road for this in 2009 and have spent more time with a Spey rod in my hand since then than most people will spend in their entire lives. I would like to thank everybody that supported me I cant ever say enough how your small donations of time or money have helped me. I also need to give thanks to the people here at The Fly Fishing Shop for giving me the time and support all those guys gave so I could be there.

Last but not least I want to thank my new family. Jamie and Audrey you both mean the world to me and only with you behind me could I have done what I did.

Winning the world championships and setting the new 15 world record was awesome and I hope I can continue to push the distances further and further in the future. The trip to Norway was fun but short. Just took care of business."

By: Mark Bachmann - 40+ years experience. Prices How to get to Mack's Canyon

You are waist deep in the riffle, shadows of the basalt ramparts above turn the water golden brown. The fly rides in the surface film under light tension, the long rod balances lightly in your hand. Your eyes wander to the Great Blue Heron stoically perched in an alder tree across the river. You are content in this soft fluid world.

The line tightens in a slow, but deliberate pull and the heavy fish twists and turns trying to dislodge your hook. Your rod arches with his power and the line melts from your screaming reel. An incredible distance away the huge silver and

gunmetal fish bolts through the surface. You are caught in the frenzy of your first Deschutes steelhead and time stands still...
Extended river camping is my specialty. We will be camped on prime water. In addition, we have another fifteen miles of prime water; all of which are within easy reach from camp with our big powerful jet boat.

You get up early after a great night's rest on a deeply padded cot. You let the sage-laden air fill your nostrils. Drink a steaming cup of coffee, eat some pastries, then don your waders and step into the sparkling river as your guide explains the finer points of fishing for trout, steelhead and salmon in this desert paradise.
Your fully licensed and insured guide is an avid fly fishermen and has many years'

experience landing & releasing these beautiful fish. He has lived and worked many days in the area where you will be fishing. You are part of his fishing team. He provides the boat, camping gear and food, special flies and expertise. It is his job to operate the boat effectively and safely, entertain you, cook, set camp, locate fish, teach skills and help you in any way he can.........
"That's what I Do", Mark Bachmann.

Schools are two days, one night camped on the river...

Staying Sharp with Dr. Slick Diamond Hook Files.
"As a fly fishing guide, I am continually amazed by the lack of attention that average clients pay to their hook points." MB
When it comes to hooking fish, nothing beats quick penetration provided by an extremely sharp point! Keeping your hooks sharp is easy if you have the right tools. Straight to the point, dull hooks, like dull fishermen, land few fish. And we know you are sharper than that.
So here are the best tools you need for improving and maintaining your hook points.

Dr. Slick 4 inch Hook Sharpener

Hook Sharpener made from Diamonds.
These hook sharpeners are made from diamond grit embedded in stainless steel. They need no maintenance and seem impervious to salt water. They sharpen by removing metal and work equally well when stroked in any direction.
An easily accessible hook sharpener is one of the most important tools in your arsenal. Sharp hooks land a higher percentage of fish than dull ones. A hook point is a cutting edge. All cutting edges become dull with use. Anglers who regularly inspect and maintain their hook points land more fish. As a matter of efficiency, the sharpening tool must be easy and quick to use. It must also be able to perform a variety of tasks and be able to reach all surfaces of the hook point. These Diamond Hones are the best hook sharpening tools we have found. Each size has flat and grooved abrasive surfaces and a different texture on each side. The 4" Sharpener has fine and medium grit and the 6" Sharpener has medium and heavy grit.
The 4" Sharpener is best suited for sharpening hook sizes #20 to #1.
The 6" Sharpener is best suited for sharpening hook sizes #4 to #10/0.
These diamond hones will also sharpen knives and scissors and perform many other useful tasks.

The Popular Bright Orange Rio AFS Lines Are Available In Limited Numbers

Advanced Flight Spey Shooting heads have a very unique taper design that easily loads up a Spey rod either for overhead casting, or for Spey, or the underhand casting style. I was able to spend a lot of time on the Deschutes River fishing the Rio AFS Shooting head system since August, 2007.  My clients and I found the AFS Line to be ideal for most of the steelhead fishing we did there.  It works in both calm and windy conditions.  Because the Deschutes is a river where the

riparian zone is allowed to flourish naturally, back-cast room is always a problem.  The short-head configuration of the AFS allows an angler to form very shallow D-loops and still cast remarkable distances.  By and large all the water that needs to be covered, can be covered easily with the AFS. The short body section and long, fine front taper efficiently transfers energy down the length of the head and results in great turnover and a precise presentation of the fly. Incredibly tight loops and effortless casts of easy distance are a result of this unique taper design.
Standard AFS floating shooting heads are two-colored with the majority of the line being a subtle green color to avoid spooking fish in low and clear water. The rear 15 ft is a visible yellow, allowing the angler to track the line and control how it fishes as it swings through the current.
Both ends of the AFS head feature a small, neat welded loop.
In 2009 George Cook and Mark Bachmann lobbied Rio to make a selection of AFS heads in bright orange. As predicted these lines became popular with anglers fishing the Deschutes River for steelhead. These lines are easy to see, so that the path of the fly can be controlled at long distances easily. Everyone who ever tried one of these line noticed an instant improvement in their casting skills because when you can see your line, anchor placement and loop control become much easier. For reasons only known to Rio's accountants, the orange lines were discontinued. Demand continued even though the supply went away. Recently we found a stash of these hard to get lines. The supply is limited, but you are in luck if you act quickly.
