Coachman Bucktail Steelhead Fly
From the mists of time came the Coachman Fly. In one form or another it could have been represented in the original collection by Dame Juliana in 1496, and could have been ancient by then. There is evidence that as soon as the human race developed metal fish hooks, they started to attach feathers and hair to them. Herl body flies have probably been around since the first metal fish hooks came into the proximity of peacocks. Brown chicken hackles are common feathers also. It seems natural that the two materials should be combined on the same hook. Named as such, the original
Coachman Fly evolved in England and had a wing of white duck quill dressed low to the body. American anglers changed the wing to white tail deer hair, then to calf tail, then to kid goat. On which side of the Atlantic the red tail was added is up for debate. Northwest anglers found that most species of salmonids will eat a Coachman Fly, but summer steelhead are very fond of them, especially tied in smaller sizes. Ours are tied on very strong nickel plated hooks, and have accounted for many steelhead.

Rio Spey VersiLeaders
Our camp thermometer registered 108-degrees in the bottom of the Deschutes Canyon. The water warmed accordingly and the steelhead went into the doldrums. My resourceful guest, Bruce Hampton added a 15' sinking VersiLeader to the end of his floating Spey line and managed to turn the tables on a couple of steelies who hadn't the energy to rise all the way to the surface for the same fly, a Fly du Jour. Determination and little tricks like this can often add to your catch.
10 ft (3 m) and 15 ft (4.6 m) leaders with a high tenacity nylon core coated with a super low modulus polymer mixture. VersiLeaders feature an ultra smooth welded loop in the butt end making it easy to connect to the fly line.
The floating Spey VersiLeader is perfect for forming the anchor when spey casting Scandinavian style.
These leaders are ideal additions to all Spey lines and in particular RIO's AFS and Steelhead Scandi lines. They come in a full range of sink rates to customize your presentations.

Densities: Floating, 1.5 ips (3.7 cm/s), 2.6 ips (6.6cm/s), 3.9 ips (9.9cm/s), 5.6 ips (14.2cm/s), 7.0 ips (17.8cm/s)

Strength: 24lb

Rio Spey VersiLeader Full Set

LAMSON LITESPEED Lamson Reels In Action
HARD ALOX™ Finish Reel Handy!
The new Lamson Litespeed Hard Alox™ is a true large arbor reel with a fully-sealed drag system. No water or dirt can get into the mechanism to effect drag control or pressure setting. This unique drag system consists of a pair of perfectly matched cones which are engaged under variable spring pressure. The drag is indescribably smooth and has a wide latitude of settings. These reels are extremely lightweight and have very few moving parts.
Litespeed Reels are machined in the U.S.A. from solid aluminum alloy bar stock. The end result is a
very fine, high performance large arbor reel at a price that is comparable to many reels that are made off shore. The large arbor Lamson Litespeed Hard Alox™ offers incredible value. Litespeed reels are now offered in only one finish -- a proprietary combination of alloy selection and conversion coating that is called “Hard Alox”. The term Hard Alox is taken from the anodizing process itself, wherein the aluminum surface is converted to aluminum oxide. By increasing the coating thickness and reducing porosity, the Hard Alox coating is much more durable than any other reel. Hard Alox trumps the conventional and ubiquitous Type 2 anodize, a finish which emphasizes gloss and color selection over durability. In place of Type 2, Hard Alox enhances resistance to abrasion, impact and corrosion and a look that tells the story of beauty which, while not being just “skin deep”, actually does start there.

In order to to maintain structural rigidity each surface of the LiteSpeed
Hard Alox™ is curved. This subtly complex shape is extremely demanding and expensive to machine, but results in a strong, light, and beautifully unique high-performance fly reel. The effectiveness and durability of the Litespeed Series of reels has been thoroughly proven by our staff over the last 12-seasons. This is one of the toughest and smoothest reels on the market today.
Incremental improvements such as: improved seals, stainless steel bearings and Hard Alox™ finish have taken a superior design to a new level of good looks and dependability.
If you bought a LiteSpeed 12 years ago, the spools and frames will interchange with newest Hard Alox™ reels. The bearings and seals can be upgraded to the newest standards at no charge. Now that is reel handy! We like 'em!
