Beulah Platinum Spey Rods
Beulah Platinum has become one of the hottest lines of Spey Rods at The Fly Fishing Shop in Welches, Oregon for very good reasons. Platinum rods are extremely high-tech featuring three different types of graphite and boron stringers in the blank construction. Additionally these rods have the best fitting ferrules found on any two-handers. This helps transmit power smoothly and they stay together while casting without messy tape. The most surprising feature on the Beulah Platinum Spey Rods are their handles. Each individual cork is glued to the blank then the handle is lathe-turned on the blank for maximum durability and the best transmission of feel during the casting process. The cosmetics of these rods with rubberized cork accents in the handles and four color wraps, and impeccable epoxy work are features that are found only on expensive custom rods such as Meisers, Burkheimers, and Andersons. Beulah Platinum rods cost 2/3's the price, are light-weight in the hand, are usually available for immediate delivery, and often out preform their custom counter-parts.
Beulah Platinum Spey rods deliver your flies with autority and land your dreams...
These rods offer a traditional flex pattern that loads much deep into the butt section, has a fast and terrific feeling tip recovery and is feather weight in hand. The new Platinum series are designed around brand new mandrels and possess a Carbon scrim process, lower 28% resin count to bring the overall blank weight down and a much higher blank pressure rolling technique that insures better overall blank consistency.

SP1175-4 Platinum

Length: 11' 7" Line: #5 Pieces: 4

A true “trout” spey seems like a great idea. At Beulah, they had a hard time wrapping their minds around the idea that a 5 weight spey rod needing 380-400 grain load was actually fun for trout. So, they created the newly released 11’7” 5 weight Platinum! You’ll find a sweet spot between 250-300 grains depending on your line choice. Fish Redsides on the Deschutes employing soft hackles on a floating line or small to medium streamer patterns w/sink tips on the Yakima, blitz down to the Rogue, Klamath and Trinity later in the season fishing Half Pounders with the possibility of mature 3-7 pound Steelies. Truly a casting dream and a blast to fish, the new 5 weight Platinum makes a perfect trout spey and is ready for that surprise “trophy” fish.

SP1266-4 Platinum

Length: 12' 6" Line: #6 Pieces: 4

If Beulah two handed rods were a baseball team, our NEW Platinum 12’6” #6 weight would be the MVP. Thanks to Beulah's carbon scrim, the blank weighs only 2.85 ounces and the completed rod weighs only 6.5 ounces. What kind of 6 weight is it? Spot on! This rod features a more traditional full-flex “Spey” action that loads deep into the butt section with extremely fast tip recovery making it a joy to cast in all conditions. You can call us, because the answer is YES! It will handle big water and big brute Steelhead while not overpowering the smallish 3-4 pound fish making them special too. SP1327-4 Platinum

Length: 13' 2" Line: #7 Pieces: 4

Maybe the “Sweetheart” in the series! Mainly because this rod can be fished confidently anywhere in the lower 48 and abroad for summer or winter Steelhead and will cross-over into Chinook territory. Beulah's new 13’2” Platinum is not an 8 weight in 7 weight clothing, it is an extremely “Crisp” 7 weight that loads easily with a variety of lines and casting styles. The finished rod weighs only 6.8 ounces making it easy to fish long hard days on the water chasing “Steel”. Ridiculously light in hand this rod balances with reels as light as 8 ounces and handles reels nicely to 11 ounces. You won’t have a hard time finding a place for this rod in your two-handed quiver!

SP1248-4 Platinum

Length: 12' 4" Line: #8 Pieces: 4

Beulah Platinum 12’4” 8wt~ There is little more addicting in the angling world than swinging a fly and coaxing a take from a bright Steelhead or Salmon that has just entered a coastal river system. Fresh in from the ocean these fish can take many casts to find, and a lot of skill and luck to land. A rugged coastal stream with a steep gradient can make the challenge even more intense. The Beulah 12’4” 8wt was designed to meet this challenge. Light yet stout, this rod will allow you to cast in tight quarters using heavy tips and weighted flies with the potential to cover miles of water without fatiguing. With extra power in reserve, the 12’4” 8wt Platinum Spey rod casts intruders and T-14 like most rods casts a dry fly.
The power and flex of this rod will also make it an excellent candidate for two hand casting in the surf either Spey or two hand overhead.

POM Skater, October Caddis
This may be one of the most adaptable waking flies ever devised. The main part of the body is constructed from sealed cell foam, which makes the fly virtually unsinkable un less weight is added. No riffle hitch needs to be added.
I seems this fly wakes best when attached with a small non-tightening loop knot.

Kenny Morrish says about his POM Skater: "The number one reason that steelheaders don’t catch steelhead on dries is that they fail to tie them on in the first place. The second reason they fail is that when they do tie them on, they lack the needed confidence to fish them hard. Your typical angler will fish a tip for days without a pull but never question the act of fishing a wet fly and tip. That same angler might fish one or two fishless runs with a dry and switch back to a wet fly in hopes of being more effective. Then, by giving the tip and the wet fly more time in the water, they fulfill the prophecy and make fishing the wet fly seemingly more effective. The third reason is bound up in preconceptions about water temperatures. Some anglers draw the line at 50 degrees, others at 45 but all these lines are arbitrary, unfounded and misleading. Likewise, many anglers who fish in BC seem to think that come October 1st that steelhead no longer eat dries! I laugh aloud at that one.
Last season I fished the Sustut and Skeena in mid October through the heart of a brutal cold snap. Water temps were dropping hard but when we came to a legendary tailout on the Skeena, I couldn’t bear to see it fished through first with a tip. It just seemed wrong. So, being a gentleman, I volunteered to fish it through first with the dry. My companions were happy to oblige. The ice had just melted out of the guides minute before, and the water temp was 36 degrees. They watched me gently chug my go to Pom Skater across the greasy water for three casts and on the fourth we all saw the buck’s big nose gently rise and drop, barley leaving ring. And while those were far from the best dry fly conditions of the season, it proved to be my best fish of the season. The one thing I can say with some certainty is that if I hadn’t tied the dry on and fished it with confidence, I never would have caught the fish pictured on a dry!"

Fly Boxes are a very important part of our gear.
If you don't believe it, inventory your favorite box and see how much money worth of flies

The Last Ten Days
Spent from 7/30 to 8/8 camped on the Deschutes taking people fishing with our jet boat. Had four different groups with anglers ranging through all experience levels. Most of my clients during this period were beginners to advanced beginners. The weather, as would be expected for that time of year was hot with afternoon temperatures ranging to just over 100 degrees a couple of days. Highest afternoon water temperature recorded on my Lowrance fish finder was 71.7-degrees. despite the adverse conditions, nearly everyone hooked steelhead, and some anglers landed several.
