Crease Fly
Crease Fly, Black Back Crease Fly, Olive Back
Crease Fly, Blue Back Crease Fly, Silver
These unique flies are the creation of Captain Joseph Blados from Long Island. They are produced by Umpqua Feather Merchants. This fly is the rage for striped bass. We first heard about them a couple of years ago and decided to take a few to the Sea of Cortez. There are a number of near-shore Mexican species such as Cabrillas, Pargos and Bonitos that will eat Crease Flies. Crease flies have also proved to be a great change-up fly for Dorados that had already seen too many Mark's Sardines. Crease Flies are tied on long shank stainless steel hooks. A tail of white bucktail and Flashabou is tied to the hook shank. Then a pre-cut piece of Mylar coated foam sheet is folded and super glued in place for the body. Coloring is added to the back. Then reflective eyes are installed. Then the foam body is given a coating of clear epoxy. Crease flies are neutral buoyancy and have a slight wiggle when retrieved. They have proven to be fairly durable and productive enough to earn a ride to any saltwater destination we travel to.

Crease Fly, Black Back Crease Fly, Black Back
Many bait fish are dark on the back and light on the belly. Black is a very effective color in all light conditions.

Umpqua Big Fly Boat Boxes

Pictured above is the Umpqua Ultimate Boat Box we used on our recent Mexican trip. The picture was taken after a couple of day's use. The flies we used are from 3" to 6" long. A leader clipper, hook sharpener and a couple of spools of tippet were added for convenience.

A handy feature is the external slotted foam piece so that used, and unused flies aren't mixed so that saltwater doesn't contaminate unused flies.

These boxes will undoubtedly find favor with any anglers using larger flies, while fishing from a boat. These boxes are convenient to use, lightweight, extremely durable, and cost effective. We've found that the Baby Boat box is convenient storage for steelhead and bass flies as well as saltwater flies.

Bubble Head Popper
Blue/Silver Olive/Silver White
Gene and Patty Gramzow aboard the boat Siria were fifty yards from Patty Barnes and I aboard the boat La Nonconforma. All of us were were catching lots of dorado. The fish averaged 18-25 pounds and were ferocious. Gene was using a popper and seemed to be catching a few more fish than the rest of us. I yelled over and asked what he was using. He said, "A Bubble Head, it has a hole in the face and spurts water out of the top of the head. Come on over and I'll give you one!" During the next two days, I wore the fly out catching dorado after dorado.

Rainey's Bubble Head Popper Fly, Blue/Silver
Bubble Heads are true works of art. You will marvel at the craftsmanship used in the construction of these flies. The pearlescent scale pattern paint is covered with a flawless coat of crystal clear epoxy. We have seen nothing else to compare. They also have proven to be very durable. One 3/0 bubble Head landed over thirty dorado for me.
The Blue/Silver Bubble Head is in a standard fly flying fish flying fish color. Blue/Silver is also good for mimicking certain kinds of mackerel and herring. These forage fish are often most active in the fading light of evening, especially along the edges of Sargasso paddies or kelp beds.

Rainey's Bubble Head Popper Fly, Olive/Silver
Olive/Silver has been the best color combination during morning and mid-day dorado quests in the Sea of Cortez. This is especially true when you are chumming up dorado that are hanging around patches of Sargasso. On the average, no other fly beats a Mark's Sardina in this situation. But, there are times during the brightest part of the day when a bubble Head has an edge. Often dorado will attack it as soon as it hits the water or on the first strip. During these situations I use the same Rio Outbound Intermediate line that I use with the Sardinas. Stripping the instant the fly hits the water often gives best results.

Rainey's Bubble Head Popper Fly, White
This fly is pearl white with a dark gray scale-pattern back, and is a color combination which has been very good during cloudy periods when fishing blue water. White may be the best color for fishing sandy shore lines. Bubble Heads are proven flies for rooster fish, especially during periods of rough water. a floating Rio Outbound is a great line for this work. A medium length, stout leader will make the job easier and more productive. We like to wind-drift in a boat and fire casts toward the beach into water that averages about 3-6 feet deep. Strip aggressively. Long caster have an advantage.
