Loreto, Mexico 2012 Report
062812
Eight amigos: Mark, Patty, Harold, Jeff, Max, Lisa, Brian & Pete flew on Alaska Airlines from Portland Oregon through Los Angeles, CA, and on to Loreto Mexico, where we arrived about two in the afternoon. By 3:30 we were comfortably checked into the Desert Inn on the shore of the Sea of Cortez.
062912
This year there were no sardinas for chum, which made fly fishing for dorados much more difficult than in the past. Instead the guides had come up with a plan where they used live mackerel in a "bait and switch" technique to draw dorado and billfish to the boats so that the fish could be caught with flies. This technique did not result in the number of hook-ups that we had experience in past years, but the average size of the dorados were often larger.

Patty got the first fish in our boat, an 85-pound Striped Marlin on a 3/0 Mark's Sardina fly.
063012
We took the boat through a wide circuit north of Coronado Island. Rough water scattered the floating weed mats and  fish. This day Patty and Mark only landed a couple of smaller dorado of about 15-pounds apeice.

Even smaller dorado pull hard and are a lot of fun.
070112
The wind died and the Sea of Cortez was flat, which made spotting floating weed beds easier.

Our third day we each landed 10 dorado. This was our best day for dorado numbers. Fish averaged 15-35 pounds, however larger fish were yet to come.
070212
The wind resumed and just standing up in the boat was often a chore. At one point two dorado of 25-35 pounds were hooked, which then crossed our lines, not once but twice, then dove through a weed mat and one rod wound up getting broken. You always want to bring an extra rod.

The fourth day Mark landed his larges dorado ever. Guide, Eulogio Davis Sanchez estimated it at 57-pounds. The winning combination: G. Loomis NRX #12, Vanquish #12 reel, Rio Outbound Intermediate Line + Skok's Mushy Mackerel 3/0.
070312
The fifth day the wind blew the hardest of the trip.

We stayed in the shelter of Carmen Island and fished the shoreline for bottom fish. The Sea of Cortez offers an interesting collection.
070412
On day six, calm returns to the Sea of Cortez.

With the flat water it once again becomes easy to spot weed mats and dorado. Patty and I each catch several.
070512
Day seven we flew home without incident. Alaska Airline's Terminal in LAX is much improved and getting through customs and to our returning flight was easy. Below is a collection of pictures from other members of our fun group of fine anglers.

Two guide boats waiting to take us fishing in the morning.

Harold's big dorado came to a much rewarding perfect presentation.

Jeff's Buff matches this very bright dorado.

We ate like kings.

Lisa got a lot of help from Captian Cuervo.

Max caught dorado every day, and even enjoyed the little ones.

Coronado means volcano. Isla Coronado is a volcano.

Brian displays this big bull.

No trick picture here from Pete. The fish tail is touching the bottom of the boat.

G. Loomis says about this rod: "A smooth, powerful casting 13-footer rated for an 8/9 Scandi head. A 500-grain head loads this rod perfectly and makes tight narrow loops using the "under hand" cast. At 550 grains, utilizing the Skagit method, it will manage all the necessary tips... full sinking, intermediate or floating. While it casts the new short Scandi-style heads exceptionally well, it's more than capable of handling a wide variety of casting strokes given the proper lines. A wonderful choice for medium to large rivers. It is capable of casting big, weighted flies if necessary, to get down in those deep pockets where salmon or steelhead rest on their migratory journey. NRX gives you unbelievable power and line control in a rod so light it's insane!"

Our tests in the field:
We first used this rod in October of 2010. Since then we have used it in Russia fishing for Atlantic Salmon, and in North America for steelhead and Chinooks. It is adaptable to all types of fly lines, but in our opinion it is a superior Scandi rod and a very good Skagit rod. Because of the fast aggressive action this rod is better with touch-and-go casts than sustained anchor casts. As would would be imagined it is more fun with fish that average over ten pounds.

NRX 1689/10-4 FLY Length: 14' Line: #9/10 Pieces: 4

As two-hand rods get longer, casting distance increases, that's a given. The beauty of this 14-footer is the NRX dynamics... it's insanely light, has extraordinary power and handles like a rod much shorter. It's totally capable of handling heavier heads and is sneaky quick... a bonus when you want to turn over big, weighted flies. Big winter steelhead won't go far to chase down a fly so you have to put it right in their face making accuracy and line control is everything. Anglers swinging big tube flies on swift Nordic rivers will appreciate the power of this rod. This rod is dual-rated in grams for Europe and grains for the North American market. Under the G. Loomis the standard rating-system this would be a 9/10. This is a great all-around two-hand rod!

When maximum distance is your goal this is the rod you want in your hands. Even in tough conditions... wind, rain and high water, you need a big rod, but one that doesn't wear you out. You need a rod that can cover the water, control the swing and still be manageable. It's hard to imagine a 15-foot rod that can be characterized as manageable, but this one does all that and more. Thanks to NRX technology, this is the big, Mac-Daddy of the G. Loomis NRX two-hand rods. It has unbelievable line control, capable of handling long 45' heads as well as large, air-resistant tube flies on the big rivers of Scandinavia and gives you total coverage in the deep, fast runs these fish call home. Under the standard rating-system this would be a 10/11. As impressed as you may already be with G. Loomis GLX two-handers, this one is so light and powerful it will blow you away!!

I received a new V12LT Production Test Reel on 06/18/09. It arrived in an exciting looking glossy silver box with a huge "V" on the lid. Inside the box, the reel was enclosed in a typical, practical neoprene case. When I took the reel from the case, I just went, "Wow!
This is by far the most innovative, techy-looking reel I've seen. It has angles and recesses found on no other reels, and when you examine them, you will find that they were all engineered for extreme function. This reel is smooth with no projections to bark your knuckles and no recesses to stick a fly line. With this reel, form follows function with no sparing of expense or time in development. There is a full 1/4" of clearance between the line and the polished stainless steel line guard, which is perfect. This reel has gotten a lot of boat-time in the past four seasons, probably landing well over 200 dorados and several billfish with no mechanical problems of any kind. It has been attached to various Sage and G. Loomis 12-weight rods. I also received a V10LT, which is a magnificent reel for 7/8/9 size Spey outfits. Studded Sole Maintenance

Being able to cast precisely is always an advantage when fishing.

The process of fly casting starts from the bottom of your feet.

The bottom of your feet provide the platform from which the rest of your body preforms the cast.

This platform needs to be stable and confident.

Wading is an acquired skill-set requiring practice and the right kind of well maintained wading gear.

You will need wading shoes that are both streamlined and supportive.
Whereas a pair of Nike Airs won't turn you into Michael Jordan, pair of well selected wading shoes will enable you to wade in a steelhead river.

Wearing traction devises on the bottom of your wading shoes is highly encouraged by us.
Cleats like all other gear eventually wears out.

Cleats that are screwed into Vibram soles are easily replaced and should be inspected after each trip to the water. Be sure to replace all worn cleats. Worn out cleats are slicker than no cleats.

Our boats are all "Cleat-Proofed", and we've factored the damage that cleats do to our crafts, and depreciated it off.

In my personal opinion, "Boots with laces are more secure than boots with Boaź winders, because laces can distribute tension more precisely."

I have used many brands of wading shoes. Simms "Guide Boots" are the best, with Simms Rivershed a close second.

Problem sometimes arise for ladies in finding the right fit in these models.

When fitting wading shoes: streamlined is best, but an inch too long is better than a 1/16th too short.

Ankle support and protection is paramount after fit and traction.

Vibram soles are good only if traction devises are added to them.

If customized properly, Vibram is as good as studded felt, and is far more durable.
