Loop Rods By Matt Sherman

Well, itís no secret that one of the greatest things about being in the industry in any capacity is that you gain access to a lot of equipment as a matter of circumstance. Those in the know are aware that much like any related outdoor industry, putting your equipment in the hands of guides and shop guys who gain a lot of exposure simply because we fish ALOT, is the very best way to get yourself out there as a company. At this particular shop, in my experience anyways, there are a lot of opportunities for both manufacturers and employees to work in conjunction with one another to make the wheels of commerce turn. Our latest addition here at The Fly Fishing Shop, which we are very excited about might I add, is Loop USA.
Fast, accurate, and just flat out good are some of the adjectives that I would use to describe these rods in particular. At this point in the game, most if not all high end rods come with all the proverbial bells and whistles. Things like nano-resin technology, titanium stripping guides, and exquisite cork work are just a standard for those who would like to consider themselves in the upper echelon of rod manufacturing. Loop has all bases covered as far as that goes and more. I personally am not a bells and whistles guy, as my friend Mike would say it is all about the meat and potatoes. I want performance; cosmetics are not what I put my money into.
The first rod I had in my hands was the twelve and a half foot six weight Loop Cross S1. Talk about line speed, light in hand, fast to recover, and lined up with the Loop Evotec and a six weight low float Scandinavian style shooting head this setup is right up there with any other ďsports carĒ style rod in a parking lot full of ďhigh endĒ competitors. Again, I will reiterate the fact that the cosmetics donít come into play much for a guy like me, I may have been thrown off initially by things like the reel seat and other unique factors involved with the Loop rods. However, when youíre throwing loops so tight you canít fit a piece of paper in between them; letís just say I was a fan from the start. I determined in the first twenty casts that these rods do the most important thing rods do, and they do it very well, cast tight Loops. No pun intended.
Next up was the Goran Andersson twelve foot six weight. Itís not debatable that the man himself is one of the most influential two handed casting aficionados to have ever graced a steelhead/salmon river. His underhand style of casting changed the way we approach fishing some of the tightest spots on our favorite rivers that, for so long, were simply unfishable. The style itself has taken hold, and his signature series of rods isnít going anywhere either. Cosmetics may not mean squat to me, but the nostalgia of holding a rod with such a figures name on the blank, and casting it in the same places as the man himself is awesome. Itís a bit like standing in my old stomping grounds on Silver Creek in Idaho, knowing that youíre wading the same stream, and perhaps fishing the same drift as Ernest Hemingway did years back. Those are the types of thoughts that run through my mind while swinging flies with a Goran Andersson signature series rod in my hand, and I donít care who you are, that is just cool.
At this point I have been lucky enough to get my hands on a lot of what Loop is doing, the stuff works, end of story. In years past there have been questions and concerns regarding the viability of Loop USA. In my mind, there are no questions, nor doubt that Loop can hold itís own with any other fly fishing company on the planet. They have a strong foothold in the watersheds of the West and around the world as well. If youíve seen any of the AEG videos over the last several years, Geofish, Metalheads, etcÖ you see accomplished anglers like Brian Jill and Chris Owens throwing nothing but Loop. When you travel the world in search of anything that swims armed with nothing but Loop, youíre putting a lot of trust in the stuff, for me that goes a long way as well.
The folks at Loop are well traveled, and well versed in all things fly fishing. In a shop like this where companies compete to be the next big addition, we get to scrutinize everything down to the last detail. Not only am I sold on the equipment, but the folks that we work with on a day to day basis are a stand up crew of men and women who know they have something special, and are willing to go out on a limb to prove it. At this point I am not sure that is much of a risk, when you make a great product and you know it, you stand behind it with confidence and announce yourself amongst the elite in a highly competitive industry. I myself can be tough to sway, I now stand proudly next to these folks as a representative of what is to be something special amongst our industry for a long, long time. Not to suggest that Loop hasnít been in the limelight for many years, itís just my first go with them. Put simply, we here at The Fly Fishing Shop are stoked to be the newest inductee into the Loop family.

Hex Hatch Matcher Flies.
Hex hatches are big trout food.  Hex's  are to our local lakes what Salmon Flies are to the Deschutes River.  They have the power to bring the largest trout to
This trout gobbled a Mark's Hexagenia, Emerger/Cripple. the surface where they can be caught on dry flies. Hex on the Radar

There are four stages of this hatch that the angler should be aware of: nymph, emerger, dun and spinner.

Hex nymphs can start leaving their burrows as early as 7:00 in the evening and a nymph fished along the bottom can get some strikes. Major feeding activity at the surface is the last hour at dark.
More about Hexagenia Hatches

Hexagenia are the largest may flies which occur in the Northwest. Their nymphs burrow into silt of pure lakes. These hatches occur late June to early August.

Hex Nymph
Fish this fly before the hatch and during the early stages of the hatch. It is deadly up to two hours before the hatch if presented with a sinking tip line deep along the bottom. Seems to be best with a slow retrieve right on the bottom as nymphs begin to get restless and peak our of their holes. As the hatch progresses, retrieve your nymph quickly to the surface. Then during the earliest stages of emergence, fish this nymph in the surface film with a floating line. as more insects appear, switch to Mark's Emerger.

Mark's Hex Emerger
This fly looks like the nymph in the surface film. The emerging dun is just starting to emerge through a split in the back and the top of the head.  This crude looking fly has proven to be both very effective and extremely durable.  the yellow foam back is easily visible as it supports the rest of the fly which is awash and mostly submerged.

Mercer's Poxyback Hex Emerger
This fly represents a Hex as it is sliding our of the nymphal skin at the water surface. The color and size of Hex nymphs and adults can vary from one body of water to another, and even from each location in the same body of water. That is a good reason to have a sellection of different sizes and shades of Hex fly patterns.

Hex Crystal Tail Cripple, Quigley's
This fly is designed by Bob Quigley to replicates the activity of the nymph hanging beneath the surface as the dun is first breaking through the back of the shuck. This is a very effective fly during the first part of the hatch.  Grease the top part of the fly only and let the rear 2/3 of the fly dangle below the surface.
In the late 70's, while guiding on the Fall River in Northern California, Bob Quigley

observed that fish were keying on mayflies that were caught in transition between shedding their nymphal shuck and flying away as a dun. He dubbed these doomed naturals as "cripples" and developed the Quigley Cripple to capitalize on this discovery. Virtually all flies that bear the name "cripple" are based on Bob's pioneering tying style where the rear portion of the fly is tied to imitate the nymphal shuck (and rides underwater) while the front part of the fly represents the emergence of an adult (and rides above water). Next time you fool a picky fish with a cripple, tip your hat to Bob Quigley.

Hex Cripple
Cripples and Emergers can be one and the same. Each may be transitional. This pattern simulates the nymph with its huge fluffy gills underwater with the adult emerging above the surface of the water.

Hex ComparaDrake
Hex Duns vary in size and color from one lake or stream to the next. Water quality and food supply probably contribute to this variation, and also there may even be sub species within these insects, which may not have been cataloged. In some places the insects may be bright yellow with yellow wings. In other places they my have body stripes and darker wings. This type in a larger size is represented here.

This is a smaller size Hex dun, which may be encountered in some fame ponds, and coastal lakes in the Pacific Northwest.

Nealley's Hex Adult
This is a good simulation of a common variety of Hexagenia, which has a darker back and yellow wings. The bright yellow wing on this fly pattern also allows an angler to see his fly in low light conditions, and to distinguash it from the real insects during heavy hatches.

Hex Spinner, Lucca's
The spinner fall of egg laying adults usually occurs as a hatch of Hex duns is winding down. Many times trout can become selective to spinners and ignor duns. Usually during these times it is getting dark enough that it is hard for an angler to tell what is going on. Be sure to carry a few spinner patterns for these occasions.

More Hex
Giant Hexagenia Mayflies are a very important part of the food chain in some very special Cascade Mountain Lakes.  Hatches of these big bugs brings the largest trout to the surface.  Because of their
Lost Lake, Oregon
secretive nocturnal nature, Hex hatches are just now beginning to be understood.
Hexaginia Limbata...whosa....whata? Are there more than one specie of giant burrowing may fly in our local lakes?  I would seem so.  We have found two distinctly different sizes and at least one color variation.   Some of our local lakes can be fun at dark.   If you want to know more about Hexagenia hatches click here.
