This year's program is greatly expanded from last year.

Popular Northwest Angling Author, Dave Hughes has been Tenkara Fishing for more than 20 years. Dave will do a comprehensive 45-minute slide show on Tenkara fishing, at Tenkarafest II. Dave will also have a table at the event where he will be selling & signing his books and answering questions.
Jeff Gottfried  from ERA (Educational Recreational Adventures) will do a classroom presentation focusing on traditional Tenkara fishing in Japan and distinguishing this from how Tenkara fishing is being practiced in Japan, and how it is being practiced in North America.

Jeff Gottfried and Sam Vanderbeek of Educational Recreational Adventures, the only tenkara fly fishing guides in Oregon certified under the Tenkara Guides Network, will present a short cultural history of tenkara fishing in Japan and the introduction and adaptation of tenkara to North American waters. They will have on hand a collection of traditional kebari, tenkara flies, given to Gottfried by Yoshikazu Fujioka, a tenkara expert with whom he fished in Japan. In addition, they will demonstrate a variety of tenkara rods, lines and techniques in the Salmon River and assist novice tenkara anglers in learning techniques.

Jeff Gottfried, Executive Director and Lead Guide of ERA, has been teaching and guiding tenkara for 7 years. Last year, Gottfried and Sam Vanderbeek, ERA Program Director taught 127 people to fish tenkara. Every client from age 5 to 78, caught at least one trout and some as many as 12, on their first day of tenkara fishing. Last year, Gottfried landed a 19" cutthroat and a 20 rainbow on a tenkara rod using 5x tippet (and no reel). Join us at Tenkarafest to learn how this is done!

Dick Sagara, Northwest TFO rep was the center of last year's on the water, introductory Tenkara program and will be the Tenkarafest II, Master of Ceremonies, as well as an on the water Tenkara presenter.

Looking for the ultimate in simplicity and presentation?  Check out the new TFO Soft Hackle Tenkara rods.  Based on a traditional Japanese method of fishing using only a rod, line and fly, Tenkara fishing permits anglers to make precise casts, delicate presentations, and manipulate their fly with extreme ease.  Telescoping down to 20 and 20.5 inches, the Soft hackle rods are perfect for the backpacking angler.
Tenkara is a giant leap back in time to the very roots of the sport of fly fishing, when everything was simpler.    Don't miss Tenkarafest II, June 07, 2014!

The rods come with a spare tip and second section.  The rod sock has a unique line holder built in to help organize your line when not in use.  Available in two actions to match your style of fishing.

Entry Level Trout Fishing
Because of its unique location, The Fly Fishing Shop is able to offer high quality fly fishing schools. Our shop boasts the most complete indoor fly fishing classroom on the west coast of North America.  Our instructors are second to none in their dedication and understanding of the sport of fly fishing. The schools offered on this page are designed to teach students how to fly fish for trout at the most basic level. Topics covered will be: equipment selection, fly casting, knot tying, hatch identification, fly selection, reading the water, stalking fish, fly presentation, and how to land fish. Fishing schools will be conducted where there are abundant populations of native, wild trout.
The Entry Level Fly Casting School is designed to fit perfectly with our Entry Level Trout Fishing School, so that both schools can be accomplished during a two day period. Sign up for the Crash Course Mega School and Save $100. Both schools taken during consecutive days teach "how" and "why" things work the way they do, so that they will more easily be remembered. This continually reinforces the new skills as they are being acquired.
Rod/Reel/ Line Combos as well as leader, tippet and flies are provided by your instructor.
Waders may be rented.

Fly Fishing School, Entry Level Fly Casting

8:00am - 5:00pm
Ratio: One Instructor/Guide per 2- 6 students
This school is designed to give you a basic understanding of fly casting for smaller species of fish such as, trout and pan fish. It starts in an indoor class room with subjects that will enable you to choose your own tackle in an educated manner, then rig it for successful fly fishing adventures.
This program discloses how the rod, reel, line and leader act as a complimentary unit to propel your fly to the selected target. You will learn how to assemble your own gear so that it is balanced and functional. Then you will move out of doors, where you will learn how to cast, so that you can be a successful angler. This class is designed so that you will get a lot of "hands-on" support with a ratio of 2-6 students per instructor.

Fly Fishing School, Entry Level Trout Fishing

8:00am - Dark
Ratio: One Instructor/Guide per 2-3 students

Float the Deschutes River with your guide/instructor.
A wise man once said, "You can more easily figure out "how" if you can figure out "why". During the Entry Level Trout Fishing School we will unlock the secrets of how to catch trout with flies, and also why the methods work the way they do.
There will be a leisurely car ride to the lower Deschutes River. You will enjoy the ever-changing scenery as you cross the Cascade Mountains from the rain-forest to the desert. In a little over and hour you will arrive at the Deschutes River where a roomy drift boat will be launched for a safe ride down the river. Your Instructor/Guide will stop the boat periodically, and you will continue your trout fishing education.
In order to catch a trout with a fly, several things have to happen in a certain sequential order. First you have to locate a fish. Then you have to approach the fish in a stealthy manner. Then you have to present your fly in a manner that will convince the fish to eat it. After the fish eats the fly you have to figure out how to land it. It helps if before you throw the winning cast that you have figured out what the fish is likely to eat, and mapped out a plan of action for landing the fish, before the fish is actually hooked.
Your Instructor/Guide is an expert trout hunter. He will explain where trout live and why they live there. Then you will collect examples of what trout foods are active during your time on the water. Your Instructor/Guide will demonstrate how to get into position to make the perfect presentations that will enable you to catch trout with both floating and sunk flies. All the while you are attending class, you will be learning the art of observation, so you can enjoy the process of fly fishing even more.  If you are attentive and diligent during this class you will catch fish.
Class bookings are online only. Space is limited.
