Waterworks Lamson Speedster Reel

Speedster 1.5 Speedster3 Speedster 3.5
Speedster 2 Speedster 4
The designers at waterworks Lamson have never been afraid to push the envelope. The Speedster is a super-high retrieve rate reel with a narrower spool, inboard mounted handle, and an outer diameter significantly larger than other large arbor reels. The narrow spool prevents line barreling, the added circumference and inboard handle improve retrieve rate. Mate these features with the Lamson time-tested smooth as silk, maintenance free drag system, Classic Waterworks Lamson styling and attention to detail, and you have what the name implies: A Hotrod of a reel. These reels are very lightweight for their diameter. They have instantly become incredibly popular for any fishery where a hooked fish can run at you. They are made to pick up a lot of line in a hurry. Retrieve rates below are dependent on how full each spool is loaded with backing and line:
- the Speedster 3 will retrieve 11-inches per turn
- the Speedster 3.5 will retrieve 12-inches per turn
- the Speedster 4 will retrieve 13-14-inches per turn
Format: Super Arbor
Materials: Machined 6061 Aluminum, stainless steel

Dead-drifting nymphs under a strike indicator is a very effective approach to catching steelhead. Nymphing is the most popular method of fly fishing for steelhead in many rivers in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest. Nymphing works best where steelhead are congregated, such as below hatcheries. As a matter of fact nymphing is so effective that it has been banned from some rivers, such as the Umpqua because steelhead get worn out from being caught and released too many times.

Agent Onyx
Many stone fly nymphs come in brown and back.  That’s an easy addition to great recipes, and still it follows the natural bug colors fish see. Possibly with the addition of the fluorescent orange bead, this fly could be called an egg sucking stonefly. Of course there is no such thing in nature, but the steelhead don't care. They eat this fly.

Agent Orange
Todd Ostenson is a steelhead guide and shop owner from Medford, Oregon. He says, "This fly follows the natural tying evolution of my love for heavy stonefly patterns.  The first heavy stones I tied were “Montana Stones”, then came more natural golden stones, and etc.  Then came beads in the early nineties to my patterns, and the addition of rubber legs via the girdle bug.  One small detail to my girdle bugs, during my years guiding the Deschutes, was the bright orange thread head.  I wouldn’t tie one with out this.  Of course, for trout the
black thread head was fine; BUT, for

steelhead the bright orange thread head just seemed to get those extra few steelhead every week that add up over the course of a season."

Copper Swan, Red

The wing of a prince nymph, the abdomen of a Copper John.  A more durable synthetic thorax, instead of peacock.  White wings = Swan.  Swan rhymes with John.

No awards for originality here.  Just a unique design blended from the optimum ingredients of two best selling flies, on a hook to hold anything transitioning from salt water.

Dragg'N Fly
Heavier than the Agent.  Higher ‘Velcro” factor, and tied on a bent hook to keep the hook point up.  What ever your favorite deep presentation is, dead drift - low and slow - tight line - sink tip - center pin - and etc.  This fly will drag the low reaches of your favorite steelhead hideouts.  Equally effective for winter run steelhead too.

Oct'phat Ass
A heavily weighted October Caddis pupa pattern commonly used for both trout and steelhead. October Caddis usually crawl out on mid-stream boulders or stream side vegetation to hatch. However a long drift period can happen before they crawl out of the water. Emergence usually happens strongest during low light conditions.
From the second week of September, to the middle of October, this caddis pattern will get you more steelhead hook-ups on your home river.  If you don’t mind casting this heavy fly, it fishes superb on the swing too.

Lingerie Egg Pink
Chartreuse accents make many good patterns a little better.  Like the skunk for example.  A smidgen of this color just seems to get the exchange with the fish started more regularly.  As for the yarn collar,  it should not hide the fly.  Veils are for weddings.  A wispy, sexy, thin, see-thru yarn collar makes the Lingerie Egg irresistible to all species that crave the orange protein diet.

Tung. B.H Princess
The standard Prince Nymph is a great trout fly that works for steelhead too. This fly has more expensive hair, and more jewelry  than the Prince.  Hence, the Princess. A bit less tame, a lot more game.  The results are no fairytale.

Sept'ober Midnight Fire
Todd Ostenson says, "This fly has very few materials.  I was told politely , up front,  by Solitude Fly Co. representative Eric Neufeld that this fly is just too simple to make the Solitude line up.  I strung one on his rod for a evening fishing session during a store visit.  After hooking seven steelhead on the Sept’Ober Soft Hackle in one evening, Eric informed me that this fly could be sold effectively by Solitude Fly Co."

    Sandy Clave 2014

The Sandy River Spey Clave, held at Oxbow Park on the Sandy River, has grown into the largest gathering of Spey Fishers in the Western Hemisphere, even possibly the world. It is certainly the largest FREE Spey casting school, with nearly 200 students getting instruction last year. Sandy River Spey Clave 2014 will offer, free on the water demonstrations by some of the world's most talented casters the largest collecton of Spey Tackle ever assembled for you to try.

    April Vokey Spey School Reviewed

Fact is, you can beat "Mother Nature", or at-least use her to your advantage, if you are alert.
Below is an unsolicited response from one of our students:
    Mark, Travis, April,
The Special Skagit Casting Class featuring April Vokey, assisted by Travis Johnson, was not just  a class taught by a guide or casting coach, April is someone who is in the process of developing the art of being a true instructor of fly fishing.
Though she humbly admits she has waited ten years before actually formally doing teaching classes, for which she has been teaching for two years, you can definitely tell she is at work in perfecting her teaching and casting skills.
Mark, on his web site, billed the class as one for all levels, April, in her comment on "Spey Pages", billed it as a introductory class for someone wanting to learn Skagit casting, but after being a participant in the class, I would bill it as a class for someone wanting to "perfect" their Skagit and Spey casting to be a better fly fisher.
In the class there were two students who had only cast  a single handed rod, the other students were of varied Spey casting experience and levels.
We only had a short time on the river with actual instruction and casting, because the wind, snow, and ice were so bad, a winter storm alert occurred, and made conditions too unbearable to continue the on-the-water session.
We returned to the shop, had a great lunch, visited, and then started an indoor instruction time shared by April and Travis.
We covered the Snap T, Circle C, and Double Spey Casts.
We were taught correct rod mechanics for each of those casts, plus the casting faults were demonstrated, and covered for the group and each participant in the class.
The individual attention, though only using the bottom section of the double handed rod with a reel, (this is referred to as "pantomime casting"), we learned what we needed to know to perfect our Skagit and Spey casting.
Though Skagit casting was the emphasis of the class, the principles for Spey and Skagit casts were blended together very well for the two beginners who attended, and the varied levels of the other students who attended.
The class concluded with everyone having an opportunity to share, "What was something good about their cast, and what did they want to work on".
Everyone definitely agreed that the time in the shop with April and Travis, was invaluable, plus having the opportunity to view and listen to the two instructors working together as they assisted each student individually, and as a group, with the rod and casting mechanics was a "beyond expectations experience" --- one we may not have been able to relate to in such "detail", had the conditions outside have been more hospitable.

Would I attend a class like that again, Very Definitely, it was worth every amount we paid, and I look forward to the class being held again, to further develop and "perfect" the skills we were shown.

Keep up the good work at what you're offering through The Fly Fishing Shop,
    Sincerely, Ron Lauzon
